The wait is over and one year later; after Chamonix and Garmisch-Partenkirchen World Cup races, the next stop for the Alpine Skiing Racing is Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The Opening Ceremony of the Alpine World Ski Championships will take place in the Piazza Della Stazione in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Sunday 7th February 2021 at 6 pm (CET).
The Dolomites, a territory unique in the world for its beauty, will be the main protagonist of the event.

Our hope is that from the unparalleled scenery of Queen of the Dolomites, a message of hope and rebirth can reach the world, based on the healthy and constructive values of sport and the mountain".
From 7 to 21 February, the ‘Queen of the Dolomites’ will be the hotspot for the world of skiing, with the very best skiers in the world competing for the medals and the World Champion Title. Two weeks of action with the Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom, Slalom, Alpine Combined, Parallel, and Team Parallel titles on the line.
The numbers behind the organization of the first major winter sports event in the pandemic era are impressive. There are 5 world championship racecourses -Olympia delle Tofane, Vertigine, Labirinti, Rumerlo, and Druscié A; 13 races, that will decide an equal number of world titles and assign a total of 39 medals; +600 athletes from 71 nations will take turns during the 14 days of the event. There are 3.500 people involved in the event, including staff, volunteers, and members of the Federations; 450 men working on the tracks, 550 accredited media; 140 television cameras are installed and 90 of these will operate simultaneously. More than 500 million people from all over the world will watch the competitions with live TV coverage, without forgetting the digital community that will follow and interacts with the events thanks to the new Media.

Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of the most charming ski resorts in Italy. The small town is located in the Northern Italian province of Belluno in the Veneto region, near the north-eastern border with Austria. Surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Tofana, the Monte Cristallo, and the Sorapis Dolomites, Cortina is known as the "Regina delle Dolomiti". Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of the 12 ski areas of the Dolomiti Superski Ski Paradise, one of the biggest ski areas in the world with 1,200 kilometers of slopes, modern cable cars, and fabulous mountain scenery all around.
Cortina is immersed in a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty, set in the spectacular Dolomite mountains, declared by UNESCO a World Natural Heritage Area.
Cortina d’Ampezzo made its debut on the FIS World Cup with the Men’s Downhill in 1969 and became a fixture on the Women’s Downhill tour for three years beginning in 1975. After a long hiatus, the venue has been an annual stop on the Women’s World Cup since 1993, hosting Downhill, Super G races on the marvelous Olimpia delle Tofane slope, One of the most spectacular settings on the circuit.
Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted from 26 January to 5 February 1956 the VII Olympic Winter Games. The Cortina Games were the first Winter Olympics to be broadcast to a multi-national audience.
70 years after the 1956 Games Cortina will jointly host the 2026 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Winter Paralympics.
