Lara Gut-Behrami returned to her winning ways with a Super-G victory at St. Moritz Today. Gut-Behrami was characteristically compact and consistent. She bested Sofia Goggia by 0.18 seconds. Mikaela Shiffrin joined the unbeatable duo to complete the podium (+1.18 s.).
Gut-Behrami finished on the podium in each of the last seven World Cup Super-G events. The Swiss claimed four successive wins from the start of 2021 (St. Anton, Crans-Montana, and twice in Garmisch-Partenkirchen), before finishing runner-up to Federica Brignone in Val di Fassa on 28 February and Sofia Goggia last Sunday in Lake Louise.
With 17 super-G wins in the World Cup, she is level with Renate Götschl in third place on the women's list for most World Cup victories in the Super-G, behind Lindsey Vonn (28).
Her first World Cup career win was here in the Super-G on 20 December 2008.
The Swiss with 33 wins also ties Hanni Wenzel (33) in ninth place on the women's list for most World Cup wins. Katja Seizinger (36) is in eighth.
"It's nice to win here again. It wasn't easy. The visibility wasn't that good and it was bumpy. But I enjoy skiing Super-G's where you have to fully attack, and I succeeded", said Gut-Behrami.
“If you look at the podium today, we have three very different racers. We have a racer like Mikaela who skis perfectly with a really clean technique and we have Sofia who is known to risk everything and now she is skiing much more safely. In skiing, there is not a rule of how you have to ski but just to be as fast as you can", added Gut-Behrami.
On Sunday Sofia Goggia in Lake Louise won her fourth World Cup race in the Super-G. beating Lara Gut-Behrami by 0.11 seconds. With today's second-place Goggia achieved eleven World Cup podiums in the Super-G.
The last time Mikaela Shiffrin was on a speed event podium was in Bansko in January 2020 in the Super-G (she won the Downhill and the SG). Of Shiffrin's six World Cup Super-G podiums, three came in St. Moritz. She claimed victory in the Swiss ski resort on 8 December 2018 and finished third on 14 December 2019.
"(the course) was like a rollercoaster. In between every single turn, there are also little ripples and rollers and you can’t see those at all. I have the potential to be competitive. I don’t really trust myself enough to be the most aggressive on this hill", Shiffrin said.
