Mikaela Shiffrin picked up after the World Championships right where she left off, -she had won the most recent slalom in Flachau on 12 January-, with a slalom victory in the Women’s World Cup today in Jasna.
It was the American’s 69th career World Cup victory. Shiffrin has won 45 World Cup slalom events, which is already an all-time record among men and women. She is one victory shy of the record for most World Cup wins in any discipline, 46 by Ingemar Stenmark in the Giant Slalom.
In her last 49 slalom races in the World Cup, Shiffrin finished on the podium 45 times, 36 of them at the top of it.
Mikaela Shiffrin trailed Petra Vlhova after the first run but finished 0.34s ahead of the home favourite with Wendy Holdener third a further 0.18s adrift.
"That was a really big step. I kept pushing and that's the feeling I want to have. Today it was good enough to win, sometimes it's not, but that's the feeling, that's the fight. I felt it after my run even before Petra came down. I didn't know what she was going to do and maybe she can do something greater, but it was a really good fight for me and that's a pretty nice feeling to have now", Shiffrin said.
Petra Vlhová is leading the slalom standings (480 points), but Mikaela Shiffrin (435), and Katharina Liensberger (410), are all within 70 points. Last season, Vlhová won the slalom crystal globe, her first globe in any discipline.
With her 80 points for second place, the Slovak star has closed the gap to World Cup overall leader Lara Gut-Behrami to 107 points.
Third place went to Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener, who picked up her 26th slalom podium but still finds herself searching for her first elusive victory.
