Under the lights in the Hermann Maier racecourse in Flachau, Mikaela Shiffrin has returned to the top of the podium in a slalom event. It was her first win in Slalom since December 2019 in Lienz.
Mikaela Shiffrin has won 44 World Cup slalom events, which is already an all-time record among men and women. Only Stenmark with 46 victories in Giant Slalom has won more World Cup races than Shiffrin in a specific discipline.
Shiffrin has finished on the podium in each of the last eight World Cup slalom events held in Flachau, including a record four victories (2013, 2014, 2018, and 2021).
She is the first woman to reach eight World Cup slalom podiums at a single venue. Hirscher (10 in Adelboden), Ivica Kostelic (9 in Wengen), and Stenmark (8 in Madonna di Campiglio, 8 in Kitzbühel) already achieved this on the men's side.
Mikaela Shiffrin is now the eighth alpine skier to claim 100 World Cup podiums in all disciplines; Ingemar Stenmark (155), Marcel Hirscher (138), Lindsey Vonn (137), Annemarie Moser-Pröll (114), Renate Götschl (110), Vreni Schneider (101) and Marc Girardelli (100). Shiffrin has won 68 World Cup events. Only Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Lindsey Vonn (82) have won more World Cup events.
"There's so much energy. It's just been building up, (...) It all just went out on that run. What can I say, that’s cool”, Shiffrin said.
However, when asked about the records, she said that he had not thought about them only in the race. "I definitely wasn't thinking about records today, (...) I just wanted to ski well. This slope has kind of tripped me up the last several years. I just wanted to ski strong. It was really fun".
A consistent Katharina Liensberger finished in second place +0.19 sec behind Shiffrin after setting the best time in the second run. Liensberger is the only skier to finish on the podium in all five Women's Slalom events in the World Cup this season. She has finished also in the top 7 in each of the last 12 women's World Cup Slalom races, including a third place in both events in Levi this season and a second place in Semmering, Zagreb, and tonight in Flachau.
Wendy Holdener who was second after the opening run, came 0.43 behind in third place.
Holdener has collected now 25 World Cup podium finishes in Slalom but has yet to claim her first victory. This is currently the record for most World Cup podiums in a single discipline without winning, seven more than the previous record by Hubert Strolz (18) in the men's Giant Slalom.
