We love skiing. We love food, too, and Zermatt is one of the best ski resorts for food lovers in the Alps.

Zermatt, the village at the foot of the Matterhorn, probably the world's most famous mountain and the most photographed mountain, is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Zermatt is a car-free ski resort surrounded by an incredible landscape of mountains and glaciers. Almost one-third of the 4,000-metre peaks in the Alps are grouped around this world-famous mountain village, which has been visited by mountaineers from all over the world since the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865.

Zermatt’s ski area called "Matterhorn Glacier Paradise", is one of the largest skiable domains in the world. Skiing in Zermatt is split up into four areas: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. There is also a connection to Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy through the Plateau Rosa glacier.

Zermatt can be included in the selected group of international destination resorts that attract skiers from all over the world. For them, Zermatt epitomizes their image of Switzerland: high-alpine, awe-inspiring, and original.

Visitors to Zermatt can experience the ultimate culinary excellence, from traditional dishes in mountain restaurants to the latest creations in one of the many Gault Millau or Michelin gourmet restaurants.

The Swiss alpine village at the foot of the Matterhorn is considered by food critics the gourmet capital of the Alps, with many restaurants offering the very best in award-winning cuisine.

Zermatt is the mountain village with the highest density of restaurants and has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants and restaurants listed in the GaultMillau guide.

The Michelin Guide has awarded one star to four restaurants in Zermatt. In 2022, for the first time, a restaurant also received an award for its outstanding commitment to sustainability: the Michelin Green Star.

The recognized hosts include the After Seven restaurant at the Backstage Hotel, the Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, the Restaurant Capri in the Hotel Mont Cervin Palace, and the Brasserie Uno.

The After Seven has been awarded a Michelin star for its creative four to seven-course menus, which are prepared in the open kitchen by Florian Neubauer's dedicated team, and modern, art-influenced ambiance. Florian Neubauer became the youngest chef in Europe to be awarded two Michelin stars in his early 30s.

The Alpine Gourmet Prato Borni restaurant of the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, in the town center, serves two fantastic set menus made with top-notch ingredients: "Heimat" (Homeland) seeks inspiration in the region and "Fernweh" (Wanderlust) looks to foreign climes. The restaurant was recognized for its exceptional wine list.

Elegantly decorated on the fourth floor of Le Petit Cervin (adjacent to Mont Cervin Palace), Capri Restaurant impresses with classic Italian cuisine and a magnificent panorama of snow-covered Zermatt. In winter Head Chef Salvatore Elefante and Vincenzo Tedeschi, Restaurant Manager Christopher Morcet and Sommelier Vincenzo Riccio import the culinary delights they cook and serve in summer at the award-winning Il Riccio restaurant on Capri.

Brasserie Uno is a small, casual fine-dining restaurant recognized for its informal atmosphere and seasonal six-course menu. The Brasserie Uno collaborative kitchen is helmed by talented head chef Luis Romo, along with chef Tommaso Guardascione, who create international dishes that come alive with fresh flavors and inventive ideas.

The conscious use of seasonal and regional products earned Brasserie Uno the Michelin Green Star. This has been awarded since 2020 and recognizes commitment to environmentally friendly and resource-conserving cuisine.

The Gault Millau Guide showcases the best 880 restaurants in Switzerland – and  Zermatt is represented with 22 restaurants.

Gault et Millau is one of the most influential French Restaurant guides. It was founded in 1972 by two restaurant critics, Henri Gault (1929 –2000) and Christian Millau (1928 – 2017). Gault Millau rates on a scale of 1 to 20, with 20 highest. The points are awarded based on the (1) quality and freshness of produce, (2) creativity and professionalism in food presentation, (3) harmony of the menu, (4) timing of service, (5) presentation and salubriousness of dishes, and (6) consistency of performance. Based on this rating, high-ranking restaurants may display one to four toques. The Swiss guide was established in 1982. Recognition is highly prized and requires a minimum of 12 points.

Ski Paradise choice: Chez Vrony

"Chez Vrony" is a sophisticated mountain restaurant synonymous with excellent gastronomy on the slopes of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise. The "lodge" has been run by Vrony Cotting-Julen for many years, with the support of her husband Max.

In 2022 Chez Vrony was named GaultMillau's "Host of the Year".

Chez Vrony offers excellent food, with a breathtaking Matterhorn view. The restaurant located at 2100 meters has been lovingly furnished down to the last detail.

Chez Vrony embodies a family tradition for over 100 years and is one of the few restaurants that still uses its own organic produce from cattle that only feed on alpine grass. The dried meat, the house sausage, and Alpine cheeses are made using traditional recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

A culinary experience based on natural cuisine with traditional, local dishes, enriched with international influences.

In winter you can easily ski to the restaurant following slope no. 6 in Sunegga-Findeln.
