Corinne Suter takes first place today in the Downhill beating top favorite and defending champion Sofia Goggia by 0.16 seconds. Bronze went to Goggia's teammate Nadia Delago (+0.57).
With start number 15, the 27-year-old did a consistent race and managed a perfect final section to beat Sofia Goggia.
Suter, who won World Cup gold in Cortina d'Ampezzo a year ago, secured the Downhill double for Switzerland. It's her first Olympic medal.
Suter had consistently shown good Downhill performances this season and was never worse than seventh. But, however, the spotlight has belonged to season dominator Sofia Goggia. At the last race in the World Cup in Garmisch at the end of January, the Swiss clinched her first and only win of the season.
"I'm super happy with my run. At the finish line, I wasn't sure if it was good enough, because sometimes I had the feeling that there was wind against me, and then with me, and also from the side. It was not so easy today, but now I'm super happy", said Suter.
23 days after her fall in Cortina resulting in a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament and a small fracture of the fibula, Goggia's silver is a small miracle.
"I gave everything I could. I was really happy with my skiing. I felt like the speed was there in the upper part because I was really jumping a lot everywhere. I'm sorry for the last section, I felt like maybe there'd been some parts of the slope I had some wind against me, but it's something you cannot control. In the end, I'm happy with my result, because being here at the Olympics after my crash in Cortina was not guaranteed at all", said Goggia.
Being the youngest racer out of the top 20 athletes starting today, Nadia Delago definitely put on a show in her first Olympic Games. Delago's third-place confirms this season's Italian dominance of the speed disciplines. Delago has never been on the podium before.
"I'm very happy with my performance. The first part was not so good, but then I said now I must go straight down and push. I'm so, so happy, I don't know what to say", said Delago.
