Next weekend a Giant Slalom and a Slalom World Cup races are going to take place in Kranjska Gora. The Vitranc Cup is one of the largest traditional sports events in Slovenia and in the central part of Europe. The first skiers competed in the Vitranc Cup for the first time in 1961, and since 1968 the Vitranc Cup has been part of the FIS International Alpine Skiing World Cup.
This season, the competition for the Vitranc Cup will record its 60th performance. For two days, the best Giant slalom skiers and Slalom skiers will measure their strength on the slope in Podkoren.
Kranjska Gora is an alpine resort in Slovenia, near the mountains and glacial lakes of Triglav National Park. The Upper Sava Valley, one of the most beautiful Alpine valleys, lies in the north-westernmost part of Slovenia, right next to the tri-border with Austria and Italy.

Mathieu Faivre got back to his winning ways in commanding fashion in the last Giant Slalom race in the World Cup, topping Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt by 0.75 seconds and teammate Alexis Pinturault by 0.81. It was his second career World Cup victory. He has put together the strongest three races of his career with three straight podiums, including the World Championship gold in Cortina 2021.
Filip Zubcic won the first of the two Men's Giant Slalom held in Bansko. The Croatian was second after the first run, but a near faultless display landed him at the top podium. It was his second victory of the season.
Zubcic has finished in the top three in eight of the last 12 World Cup Giant Slalom races. This run includes wins in Naeba (February 2020), Santa Caterina (December 2020), and Bansko (February 2021).
Filip Zubcic is one of only three skiers representing Croatia to win a World Cup event, alongside siblings Janica (30) and Ivica Kostelic (26).
Before the last events in Bansko, Alexis Pinturault had won each of the last three Giant Slalom events in the World Cup. At the World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Pinturault was on course for gold after the first run but recorded a DNF after a mistake in his second run.
Pinturault has achieved 17 World Cup wins in the Giant Slalom, ranking him in fifth place on the all-time Men's list.
Alexis Pinturault is leading the Giant Slalom standings (550 points), but Marco Odermatt (525), and Filip Zubcic (486), are threatening the French leadership.
Marco Odermatt is second in the Giant Slalom standings, only 25 points behind Alexis Pinturault. Like Pinturault, Odermatt made a mistake in his Giant Slalom appearance at the world championships and recorded a DNF.
After his victory in the Super-G in Saalbach, Odermatt narrowed the gap between himself and Alexis Pinturault in the overall standings to a very slim 81 points.
Odermatt finished in the top-five in each of the last ten Giant Slalom events in the World Cup. This season he claimed his first career World Cup win in the Giant Slalom in Santa Caterina on 7 December 2020.
In 2019 Henrik Kristoffersen was crushing it in Giant Slalom and he took his third straight win in Kranjska Gora ahead of his teammate Rasmus Windingstad and Switzerland's Marco Odermatt. Both scoring their maiden World Cup podium.
Henrik Kristoffersen won the last Slalom race in the World Cup in Chamonix. It was his second World Cup victory of the season and Kristoffersen's 19th World Cup victory in slalom and his 23rd overall.
Sebastian Foss-Solevåg won gold in the Men’s Slalom at the Cortina World championships. The Norwegian beat Adrian Pertl by 0.21 seconds. World Cup Slalom champion Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway finished 0.46 behind in third.
Marco Schwarz finished on the podium in seven of the nine men's slalom events in the 2020/21 World Cup.
After winning in Adelboden Marco Schwarz became the first skier to win two slalom events in the men's World Cup this season. Schwarz has collected seven slalom podiums this World Cup season.
Clément Noël won the first of the two slaloms held in Chamonix. It was his first slalom win this World Cup season. It was Noel’s third podium of the season, after earning two second-places this year, one in Flachau and in Schladming.
Noël was the seventh skier to win a slalom race in the World Cup this season. Not since 2008-2009 have there been seven different slalom winners in the men's World Cup. The record number of slalom winners in a single World Cup season is nine, achieved in 1985-1986 and 1999-2000.
In 2019 The Vitranc Cup concluded with a slalom on Podkoren. With no less than seven former Kranjska Gora slalom winners (Hirscher, Matt, Kristoffersen, Neureuther, Myhrer, Lizeroux, Moelgg) at the start, the fight promised to be very exciting, but it’s another athlete who ended up at the very top of the podium. For the first time in his career, Switzerland’s Ramon Zenhäusern was able to earn a World Cup slalom win in the same place he claimed his first World Cup slalom podium. Henrik Kristoffersen and Marcel Hirscher complete the podium.
