Superfast and strong skiing from Lara Gut-Behrami in St Anton am Arlberg Super-G today. Despite a massive error in the last 3rd section, her speed made her able to win the race.
In a tightly-contested event, Lara Gut edge Italian Marta Bassino by 0.16 seconds. Coming in third was this season’s speed queen Corinne Suter (SUI) a mere 0.20 seconds behind. For the Swiss is her first super-G victory in nearly three years after claiming her last victory Super-G victory in February 2019 in Cortina, and earning her last World Cup victory last season in the Crans Montana Downhill.
“I’ve been skiing cleanly and technically well for a while, but the last step always seemed to elude me, (...) But today I was able to find the missing piece and I’m happy to get the victory here in St. Anton”, Lara Gut said.
The 29-year-old racer scored her 27th career Alpine Ski World Cup victory. Gut’s 13th win in World Cup Super-G came more than 12 years after her debut victory in the discipline.
"Super-G was always the key to find the easiness again, (...) I need confidence and I need to have the instincts when I’m skiing, and super-G is exactly that", added Gut.
Marta Bassino is still looking for her first Super-G World Cup victory after falling just shy of the victory. The Italian has claimed three World Cup victories in the Giant Slalom but has yet to find the top step in a World Cup speed event.
Corinne Suter is again back to the podium. The Swiss speed star is in second place in the season Downhill standings and now in third place in the season Super-G standings. Suter has been one of the most consistent performers of the season landing on the podium in four of the five women’s speed races this season.
The Eisfall and the blind gates take their toll today in #stantonamarlberg and only 34 skiers were able to finish the Super-G.
“I knew it already at the inspection, you will have some speed and then really (at) turns you have to take speed a little bit out, (...) It was so hard to find this mix", Suter said.
