Austria had another amazing day at the 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships after Marco Schwarz earned the Alpine Combined gold medal. He was bronze in this event in Åre in 2019. Austria has won now 31 world championship medals in Men's combination events.
Austria has won 10 world titles in Men's combination events, two
more than France. Until today Austria had won this world title only twice in the last 14 editions of the world championships: Benjamin Raich in 2005 and Marcel Hirscher in 2015.
Schwarz, the current World Cup leader in the slalom, impressed with his fifth-place finish in the super-G putting him in a prime position to challenge for the gold.
“I really had fun in the super-G, (...) Then I knew I had to attack in the slalom. It doesn’t get much closer than 0.04 seconds against Alexis, so I’m just happy that I got those extra hundredths on my side", said Schwarz.
Defending Champion Alexis Pinturault finished in second place only 0.04 seconds behind Schwarz. Pinturault won the Alpine combined at the world championships in Åre in 2019. He became the first Frenchman to win the world title in a men's combination event since Michel Vion in 1982.
Swiss Loic Meillard took the bronze medal finishing 1.12 behind the Austrian. Switzerland's last podium in a world championship in this event came in front of a home crowd in St. Moritz in 2017. Luca Aerni won gold, while Mauro Caviezel grabbed bronze.
